3rd day of Service Learning Program: Art Class, Sharing, Feeding Program, and Gift Giving

Our last day of service learning program is one of the best day I've ever had in my life. Why? Because I did learn a lot of new things from that day. At our 3rd day of service learning program, we had an art class that we asked the kids to draw who they want to be when they grow up. We also helped the kids on drawing and looking for the idea. Surprisingly, some kids already decided what they want to be. I found some kids want to be police, miss universe, doctor, and pilot. By this activity, I learned that even though some of the kids are coming from the bad economic condition family, but they still have their own dreams. So why do we as someone who has a good condition not dreaming a lot also?

After it, we also asked the kids to share about their drawing. Some of them has a very nice yet cute stories why they choose what they draw. Listened to their story make me and my group mate can't stop smiling and becoming more happy to hear them. Then we also continued it with feeding program. At first, we were planning to buy something from a common fast food restaurants cause kids usually love that, but the athe told us that it will be better to feeding them with the food that they cook because they already take care of the nutrition. I was feeling so amazed at that time. I realized that Bukas Palad is a kind of a very caring organization, and I also feel honoured that I can have my social activities here.

We ended our activities with giving the gift to the kids. Even its actually not a very big gift, but I can see that the kids was very happy. It touched me a lot that even the small things that we do could be other people happiness.

It was sad that I just have one term here so I can't visit them again later. It was a very fun experience for me to do social activities like this. I'm very admired Ms. Castillo, our professor because she gave us the task to do this social activities. :) I have never found this kind of activity be a part of subject when its actually a very nice activities to do. And the conclusion is that I learned a lot from doing this service learning program.

2nd day of Service Learning Program: Introducing, Trip to Jerusalem, Dancing, and Chair Games

At our second day of service learning program, we start our activities with the 15 kids. I've been so excited since the day before it because I really love and enjoy playing with kids. But I also worried because I can't speak tagalog and I'm sure that kids can't speak English also. Even though when the day came, I actually don't need to be to worry because its actually very fun to be with the kids, I really enjoy it. Even some of my group mate whom saying that they didn't like kids, they also look so happy and excited.

We began our activities with praying together and listening to the kids introduce themselves one by one. At that time, we asked the kids to tell their name, age, and their favourite food. It was very fun to listening to the kids because they are all still very innocent. Some of them are very energetic and some of them also very shy. I found it lovely and healing to see the kids smile, especially because I know that they come from a kind of not better economic condition.

After it we continued our activities with playing Trip To Jerussalem game. I'm a bit surprised that the kids can understand well about how to play the game and saw that they were very excited on playing it. We also played the Chair While Dancing Game. At that time I can not stop myself from following the kids dancing and play with them. Its very fun to play with them and make them happy.

For the 2nd day of service learning program, even its just the 2nd day, I already learned a lot. Especially, I just realized that I feel happy because the kids feel happy. I learned that our happiness is other people happiness. We can be happy with what we have now, but is it the truly happiness?

1st day of Service Learning Program: Discuss and Tour

Bukas Palad Foundation
In the end of our CSRGOVE class, we got the task to make a service learning program. I found this very interesting cause in my university in Indonesia, we don't have this kind of activity as a part of the subject. I think it is a very interesting and nice activity because the student can learn more by having a direct practice of doing a social responsibility.

At the first day, me and my group mate go to the Bukas Palad foundation to discuss more about our activity plan and having a look at the foundation. At that day, I learn so much new knowledge about the foundation. Bukas Palad foundation is actually one of the social expressions of the Focolare Movement. Its also a non-stock, non-profit, and non-government organization which established in 1983. Bukas Palad foundation provides sustainable development, education, livelihood, information and communication technology to needy children, elderly, urban poor, and victims of calamities and disasters.

The place of Bukas Palad Foundation that we visited that day is located in Pasay City, Manila. I found it as a very nice and comfortable place. It has a nice and cutely draw building, complete facilitation, clinic, and they also had their own kitchen inside to provide the food for the children. After discussing and doing a tour of the place, we decided that we will teach the class with 15 kids whom in 4-5 age years old. I felt very excited at that day because I really love kids and I also love to doing this kind of social activities.

10th Week of CSRGOVE Class: The Sixth Case and South Korea Corruption Presentation

At the 10th week, we began the class with discussed about the sixth case. The sixth case is about Solomon whom was a principal engineer at an environmental engineering consulting firm. His main role is to advise clients on what type of action to take when they are faced with risk and liabilities while conducting certain projects. The ethical issues that involved in this case is the client does not comply with the state regulation of proper waste management. Also does Solomon have to push for a more fiscally demanding yet sustainable proposal to maintain their partnership, is gaining profit more important than the overall well-being of the environment? or Is the relationship with only one client more important that the sustaining the environment?.

I think its a very interesting case because I saw so many this kind of case in Indonesia. And this kind of case usually include a very high number of bribe and gave a lot of bad impact to the environment. For this case, we choose the best alternative that Solomon could try recommending outsourcing a company/service that would help the client properly dispose of the waste from the expansion. Solomon would also tell the client about the importance of sustaining the environment. We choose this alternative because its considering not only from the firm perspective, but also how it will give impact to the environment.

Also in that week, we have a presentation about the corruption in the specific country. Our group choose South Korea because it has a very current big case about the corruption. We began our presentation with mentioned about South Korea economic background as the agricultural economy country whom success on shifted towards manufacturing and well known because their developed from being one of the world's poorest countries to become one of the world's top 20 economies today.

In our presentation, we discussed about South Korea's current corruption case which give a very big impact of their political condition. The case is actually about South Korea's President Park Geun-hye whom has become the country's first democratically elected leader to be forced from office. It could happened because of her corruption scandal. This corruption scandal centers on her relationship with an old friend, Choi Soon-Sil, and has brought allegations of cult activities, influence-peddling and leaks of classified information.

Choi is accused of using her presidential connections to pressure companies for millions of dollars in donations to two non-profit foundations she controlled. Even a very big and well known company, Samsung become one of 8 that has admitted making payments to the foundation, but denies it did so in return for any favours. President Park is alleged to have been personally involved, instructing Ms Choi and two presidential aides to collect money for the launch of Ms Choi's foundations

What makes this case become a big case is because when the justice has said that Park is confirmed with her corruption scandal, she can't be judged because of her position as a president. As this scandal unfolded, hundreds of thousands of Koreans braved the brutally cold winter temperatures to protest on the streets of Seoul from November 2016 until March 10th 2017.

Finally, four months after it, the Constitutional Court upheld that vote, ending the presidency of South Korea's first female leader. And South Korea will now hold a snap election to choose Park's replacement.

9th Week of CSRGOVE Class: The Fifth Case

At the 9th week, our class continued the debate and have the quiz 2. But because I was sick, I didn't go to the class. At the night before the class, I discussed with my group mate about the case so even though I didn't go to the class, I was able to explained about the case.

The fifth case is about Monica who works at a large medical company that reviews lab procedures. Her company job is to give the institution permission to use blood samples for laboratory testing. The ethical issues that involved in the case is about does Monica should follow the company rules and just send back the unsigned form to the supplier or she should go to her boss and discuss about the procedure or the process use to accept the form. Also is it ethical to let the blood suppliers sign a consent form which they cannot understand because it is too complex and is it ethical to let her company still doing the same procedure which made them still accept the numerous unsigned consent forms.

From this case, our group comes up with third alternative that Monica could do. The first alternative is Monica could bring the case up to her boss and give her concerns about the consent forms. She can clear up any misunderstandings she has about the process of the papers. The second alternative is Monica should make a simpler revision of the consent form and submit the proposal to the management. Also the third alternative is Monica should return the form back for a signature from the supplier without comments which also means the do nothing action.

After considered how the alternative will affect the stakeholders with utilitarian, Kantian duty, ethics of care, justice and fairness, and implication for the personal integrity, we decided that the first alternative is the best alternative because it gives all yes to the criteria. We also evaluated the decision alternative with the work's procedure, customer's loyalty and relationship, and self image and career until we found that the first alternative is the best alternative to choose.

8th Week of CSRGOVE Class: The Fourth Case, Transportation Strike, and McDonald vs Liebeck Debate

A the 8th week, we didn't have a class in the Monday because of the transportation strike. Actually, I think that transportation strike has an ethical issue on it. It was about the ethical issue between the jipniy driver and the government. The government should have more considering about the jipniy driver's perspective and needs. But from what I knew, the strike has end with the result that the government allow the jipniy driver to raise the cost from 7 peso to 8 peso. Actually from my perspective as a foreigner, it wasn't a big amount to raise the cost from 7 to 8 peso because the public transportation cost in my country is even higher than it. But the government also have to make sure for some other aspect such as making sure that the jipniy driver will treat the passenger nicely and drive well as a benefit of the higher cost.

At the beginning of the class, we discussed about the case fourth which is about Rachel who works as a Quality Assurance Engineer at a large electronics company. The ethical issues that we found from the case is that the company’s business model does not give sample to conduct Quality Control tests for their products, which may lead to a defective product. Also other ethical issue is that the company would be deceiving its customers when it ships out untested products to the market and Rachel placed the profit of the company and it’s advantage from the competitor over their customer’s safety.

Related to this case, we decide that the best alternative for it is to ship out the products but put a disclaimer that it is not guaranteed to be safe. It cause this alternative considering well about the company's image, company's goal, company's loyalty and relationship, and also about Rachel's own career.

After discussing the case, we have a debate about McDonald vs Liebeck. I found this debate very interesting because I have never heard this case before even though its a very big and interesting case. Actually this case is happened in 1994 and well known as McDonald's coffee case and the hot coffee lawsuit. This case began when Stella Liebeck, a 79-year-old woman who suffered third-degree burns in her pelvic region when she accidentally spilled hot coffee in her lap after purchasing it from a McDonald's restaurant. Liebeck was hospitalized for eight days while she underwent skin grafting, followed by two years of medical treatment. After it Liebeck's attorneys and Mc Donalds lawyer argued service quality of Mc Donald's coffee when Mc Donald's actually has followed all the coffee legal and standard.

Its a very interesting debate cause I learned a lot not only about how to giving argument in debate, but also how I should think if I was Mc Donald's lawyer. Its like I learn about looking for the legal and standard of any case. I just realized that a very simple thing like putting the "hot coffee" label in a product is a very important thing.

7th Week of CSRGOVE Class: The Third Case, Unethical Advertising Analysis, and Ethics in Marketing

At the Monday of those week, we began the class with discuss about The Third Case. The third case is about Sarah who was recently promoted to a managerial position at her industrial engineering company. But then Sarah found out that her workers worked overtime without getting paid  and when she expressed her concern to her supervisor, he explained to Sarah that the factory meets their goals by having workers work overtime and they don't have enough budget to pay the overtime workers.

From this case, we can see that the ethical issues involved that is the workers work overtime but are not paid for it and Sarah is working for a company that has illegal practices. For this case, we decided that Sarah can go to seminars to learn about how to properly manage workers in order to meet company expectations without having to work overtime for the best decision because it is well considering all the aspect (utilitarianism, kantian duty, justice and fairness, ethics of care, implications for personal integrity and character aspect).

At the Wednesday of those week, we did The Unethical Advertising Analysis and Presentation. My group presentation is about Napoleon Quince’s billboard for their liquor. Its ad billboard featured a tagline saying “Nakatikim ka na ba ng 15-anyos?” The ad was trying to send a message about the liquor, but at the same time, it had a hidden sexual meaning behind it. My group thought this was unethical because it contained sexual innuendos and since this ad was shown to the public, it is very inappropriate. There was an effort to make the ad attention grabbing but the meaning of its tagline may be taken in the wrong context by those who see it.

It can be considered unethical because the innuendo was referring to minors. It is an inappropriate tagline. Also considering the conservatism of the Philippine culture and its adherence to the Catholic Church, jokes like these are not considered moral. Because of this advertisement’s controversial tagline, it was taken down.

For those week, we also learned some new CSR's theories. We learned about Relationship Between Employer and Employee which has main duty to work towards the goal of the firm. Its theory said about the importance to obedience to supervisor, and avoid activities that might be harmful to their goal. We also learned about is ethical Downsizing possible. And then about the characteristic of Sweatshops that is the employee is the child labor, provide under range salary, and not environmental friendly. We also learned about Conflict of Interest, Bribes and Extortion, Employee Theft, and Ethical Issues in Marketing.
